2000, Wanda L. Harrell
Revision 6/2003

Another day of riding this carousel stallion, all jewel-adorned,
I ride this ride,
On this once colorful, but now gaudy, merry-go-round
Hearing the deceitfully cheerful calliope’s sound
For you see, my steed advances not with his stride
So, just ‘round and ‘round I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion with a mane of shimmering gold,
I ride this ride,
Slowly spinning in circles--fast and then slow
Hoping to get off this ride, but afraid to let go
For you see, my steed advances not with his stride
So, just ‘round and ‘round I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion in its undeviating pose,
I ride this ride,
While wanting to escape the never-ceasing monotony of each day
Knowing that I must depart, but not knowing the way
For you see, my steed advances not with his stride
So, just ‘round and ‘round I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion whose hooves only appear to prance,
I ride this ride,
Yearning to move forward, yet fully aware
This is a never-ending carousel ride to nowhere,
For you see, my steed advances not with his stride
So, just ‘round and ‘round I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion with its upturned head and nose,
I ride this ride,
Hoping that tomorrow will bring another chance to disembark
But I continue to ride non-stop through daylight and dark
For you see, my steed advances not with his stride
So, just ‘round and ‘round I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion with brilliant, feathery festoons,
I ride this ride,
Where I am not alone, yet only lonely feelings abound
In this pretext of a union, this not-so-merry marriage-go-round
For you see, my steed advances not with his stride
So, just ‘round and ‘round I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion with a coat that's glossy and bright,
I ride this ride,
Enduring this imitation of happiness, this fragile facade of joy
Where I cannot escape this ride that I have done my best to enjoy
For you see, my steed advances not with his stride
So, just ‘round and ‘round I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion with ornate reins and leather saddle,
I ride this ride,
Wasting my one and only life on this carousel...the solitude overwhelms me
And I wonder if, for another day I can survive, or is there a way for me to flee,
For as you see, my steed advances not with his stride,
So, just ‘round and ‘round, I continually ride.

Another day of riding this stallion with a long tail painted in gold,
I ride this ride,
Building courage to jump off…my heart, soul and mind I must obey.
This carousel to nowhere must finally end...there is no other way,
For you see, my steed advanced not with his stride
So, no more ‘round and ‘round…I now advance with my stride, for no longer do I continually ride.

What a profound write, cuts deep but gives hope.

Dear Wanda, Thank you for sharing this wonderful poem with the world. Here's to all the people that have jumped off, already. To those who still have to decide to do that: Wait no longer!
