Broken

A child
wandering alone
without a place to call home
because Daddy
took out his rage
on his little girl

She walks around
tears on her face
He took away
her childlike innocence
and broke
her dreams

A wife
married just two months
when suddenly
the man she loves
took out his frustrations
on the woman
he promised to love

Now she walks around
tears on her face
He took away
her happiness
and crushed all her dreams

A student
who was told
she couldn't be the writer
she one day hoped
to be
a teacher said
she would never amount
to anything
and broke
her spirit and her dreams

She walked around
tears on her face
She took away
her hunger for life
and killed her dreams

May the people
who hurt others
someday learn
that abuse--
whether it be
physical or emotional
crushes dreams
and breaks spirits
