An Ode To Daisy

She is sunlight made
dim enough to tread
the ground. Her almond
eyes are innocence when
I have to leave.

She plays with hay
meant for her warmth
in absence of toys.
A golden-paved playground
over lonely worn earth.

She is chained far
enough away to keep
her owner blissfully blind
to keep me away
like iron shackled maternity.

In her feared darkness
I ask the angels
to cradle her until
her brother wakes from
his interminable cobalt slumber.

This is a poem I wrote last night for the neighbor's Golden Retriever puppy (about 9 months old) who is kept chained in the back yard. She is too small from being malnurished and the neighbor's only interaction with her is to kick or throw sand on her when she wants to play. I feed and play with her, otherwise she would goes days without food and water. She is terrified of the dark and her barking goes on well into the night. Winter is coming and there is no warmth for her. I'm working up a plan on how to approach the neighbor about my making Daisy part of my happy family of rescued dogs and cats.
