Namesake

There was another
Daniel Watterson:
I knew him high school, senior year.

He sat behind me
to the left in class:
Fifth Period Psychology.

He didn’t talk much
but one day he said,
“Dawn... so, so beautiful, your tears.”

I came to thank him
the next day in class:
but bolt of lightning struck too fast.

“Accidental … road ...
wet,” Mrs. Bailey said:
“Students... Dawn. Sorry… Daniel’s dead.”

I can see Daniel
smiling down again
Did he send you to me instead?

This poem was written after, flipping through my high school yearbook one day, I ran across the picture of this boy who had died. I vaguely remembered my sadness at wanting to have known him better before his death. I was stunned to find that his name, which I had since forgotten, was the same (first and last) as the man I loved now.
