BY JOHNNY TAI – SMILE TIGER OR JST
Monday, December 02, 2002
Tommy was home alone that day,
Looking intot he yard where other children played
In the white pureness of Winter’s cottony bed-
Oh how he longed to have a friend.
He watched as seven years old little Sam
Built with Johnny, a new snowman,
A cigar to his lips, crown to his head,
Then they cheerfully went away…
Tommy was about nine years old,
A single child who was all alone.
Both parents worked, other children disliked him so,
Cause he wasn’t the most bright of souls.
The wind grew colder than ever,
And the children all went behind the doors.
Laughing and playing in the warmth of the fire,
Talkin’ bout smart kids that they admired.
Tommy continued to stare into the empty yard,
Watching the single snowman with his false cigar,
Then he spotted the girl with her silvery scarf,
And she was calling to him by waving her arm.
Tommy wasn’t sure if he should go
Until he saw the girl’s charming smile,
Then he put on his boots and got in his coat,
Opening the door, he ran into the winter cold…
As he reached the girl, she held out her hand:
“I know you are Tommy, please don’t ask for my name.
Just call me Snow Child, I’ll be your friend.”
Stared at her in wonder he did, deeply amazed…
She wore a silvery scarf, and a long, shiny robe,
Her eyes were full, yet empty like a pair of crystals,
Her hair tumbled down her back, the silky, platinum gold,
And though a child she appeared to be, she smiled the smile of a wiser soul.
“Look at that snowman, he’s all on his own,
Though he wears the crown of glory, but he’s heart is icy cold.
Why don’t you and I build him a mate, a snow-maiden of his world,
So he may find love in the flakes of snow, a lone-man lonely no more?”
After hours of careful work, a snow-maiden was born,
And that was not the only thing, their friendship was now warm.
“Wait for me here,” Snow Child said and ran down the road,
And several minutes later, she came back with a blooming white rose…
Tommy stared at the snowman king and his newly found queen,
And they stared back at the boy and his friend, the picture was now complete.
Then he took Snow Child’s handin his, and kissed her on the cheek:
“Thank you Snow Child my friend, the best Christmas this will always be.”
Snow Child walked over to the maiden they built, and crowned the rose upon her head,
Taking off the silvery scarf, she put that around her neck:
“I’ve got something to tell you, Tommy my dearest friend,
Look at this pair of lovers, and please don’t move your gaze.
Sooner the sun will rise and they’ll both milt away,
But cry not the tears of sorrow, cause they’ll still be together then.
Greater love is not just happiness, it’s to last till the end,
And fame and glory, they’re nothing else but crumpling snow flakes…”
As the last of her words faded away, Tommy turned and she was no longer there,
Gone, like yesterday’s raindrop, she seemed to fade in the air.
He cried out for the snow child, but echo was all he heard,
No, may be that wasn’t all, there were voices in the earth:
“Cry not the tears of grief, cause I’ll always stay in your heart,
But it’s time for me to move on now, there are other lonely hearts.
Greater love is not for ever, it’s for never to grow apart,
And fame and glory are nothing else, flakes of snow that’s all they are…”
I wish you all a happy Christmas, and hope that you find your true and greater love.
