A song bird in the air did fly
To sing a song of praise
It sang on high up in the sky
On bright and sunny days

A boy his feet upon the ground
He saw the bird he heard the sound
And wished that he was up there too
But he can't fly what can he do

Oh if I could just hold this bird
Whose sound he had so often heard
To hold it in my hand I would
There is a way I think I could

He got himself a bow you see
And aimed the arrow carefully
He pulled the string and let it fly
And watched the arrow with his eye

The songbird sang its song up there
The arrow slicing through the air
It flew on high it left the ground
And headed for that lovely sound

The song again was never heard
And in the grass there slumped a bird
He got his wish here in the end
He held the song bird in his hand
