A Sight To See

You should have seen us
All that we could be
You should have been there
We were a sight to see
Riding tall
Back in the saddle again
Conquering flames and eighty-four floors
Giving every bit of all we can
Walking the high wire, balancing a tightrope
Battling that beast back into its cage
Capturing it, reeling it in
Putting up invisible walls around its rage
You should have seen us
Marching those eighty-four floors
Doing all that could be done
Daring to do even more
Climbing that beanstalk
On shuddering, wavering limbs
Running on past those escaping
Willing ourselves not to give in
We ascended all the way
To where the beast made its home
Vowing we would defeat it
We’d overturn every stone
We’d not stop till it was vanquished
Till there was nothing left
Not a whisper of flame
We fought that good fight
Till that fiery end came
And you should have seen us
All that we could be
If you had been there, you’d have known
We were a sight to see
Riding tall, riding proud
Back in the saddle again
Conquering flames and those eighty-four floors
We’d give everything not to give in
And we ascended all the way
To where the beast made its home
We waged battle in its lair
But in the end we were lost and alone
Fighting hard
But losing the war
Holding fast
But defeated to the core
You should have seen us
And all that we could be
If you had been there, then you would know
There we were
A sight to see
