Family Trip

This poem is about family vacations we took when I was young.

I remember those times in the old family car
Traveling down highways under the sun and the stars
Laughing and singing as we rolled on along
Without a care in the world; nothing could go wrong
Stopping at parks to eat a picnic lunch
Stretching our legs, while enjoying this so much
Then back into the car we go once again
Wishing to be there, so our vacation can begin
I remember crossing bridges with water beneath
Recalling the mind-set and a great since of peace
I remember the mountains as we continued our trip
Looking all majestic as passed them we slipped
We see other travelers also headed our way
Thanking God every moment for such a beautiful day
Nibbling on snacks as we head down the road
Hearing all the stories that everyone told
Laughing and talking throughout this long journey
Constantly praying each day be warm and sunny
I remember going to the ocean and playing in the sand
I recall the little shovel, the bucket and the pan
I remember all the smiles on everyone’s face
Absorbing all the beauty of this special place
I can still hear mama say “Now don’t you get wet!”
Commence with the playing; I knew I’d forget
I can hear her again say, “Don’t get sand in your hair!”
Having to much fun and I really didn’t care
Vacations almost over its time to go home
Our trip in reverse now, no more time to roam
The ocean and the sand will be there on the next little journey
Thankful for the memories until I am a returnee.

Yes Shirley, you brought back sweet memories of youth. Things in the past we never forget. I can tell you easily what happened 50 years ago, but can't tell you what I ate yesterday. We long for the past. Bill
