Late one night, alone and at home
The pressures of this life caught up with me
The homeless on the street
Children with little food to eat
Lying, murder, greed, and hate in the world around me
Knives in the back, don't know who to trust
Working sixty hours a week
Oh Lord Why hast thou forsaken me

Soon I drifted off to sleep
I find myself lost in the woods
Not knowing which way to travel
When the screech of a beautiful white headed eagle
Caught me by surprise
He flew down next to me and settled himself on a branch
"Come with me my lost friend, I shall be your guide"
His direct manner startled me
Yet I knew I could trust my new found friend
I nodded my approval and with a strong leap
He bounded into the sky
Then without knowing how I was soon by his side
Souring into the clouds

We soon landed next to a river
"Where are we?" I asked
"Be quiet, watch, and listen" came his soft reply
As we watched there together a beaver came
To that river and built his dam
Time seemed to have no meaning as his task was completed in minuets
And the river soon formed a pond
In this new pond life started to flourish
New trees took root and flowers bloomed
The fish multiplied as well

Soon a bear came to this thriving pool of the beaver
With the bear were two cubs
As the bear approached the water
A huge fish swam to the shore
"Hello my large brown friend" the fish said to the bear
"My your cubs look hungry"
"Indeed they are fish" replied the bear
"Well" continued the fish "I have had a good life
Here in this pond, and now freely give myself to you and your family"
"Thank you" the bear bowed
"May the next life bring you much happiness"
Then the bear took the fish into her mouth
And left with her cubs

Again the eagle took flight with me by his side
As we flew the sun bowed unto the moon and sank into the ground
The moon smiled bright and shared its soft light with all below
We turned to a small flickering glow in a forest clearing
As we neared I could see a fire in the middle of the clearing
Gathered around This fire were animals from all over the forest
The wolf, fox, beaver, the bear and her cubs,
a deer, an owl, and many others
The eagle and I soon landed at the edge of the gathering
And I was afraid
"Do not be afraid" the eagle sensed my fear
"Come join us" said the deer
"We are all family here" added the wolf
So I joined this circle of life by the fireside

"Why are we here?" I asked my eagle guide
"Listen and watch" he said
Then a voice came down from the heavens and all the animals bowed
I did the same
"So much pain in this world I have created
Satan has man on his leash" his voice conveyed great sadness
"Yet at this fireside I see Eden as it was meant to be
This man here with you has a good heart
And with that there is still hope"
Then he said to me "You are not forsaken
In you is the worlds salvation
As long as you treat your fellow man well
Feed the hungry, bring hope to the hopeless
And love, I will always be here"

The Eagle shed a tear and where that tear touched the ground
Hope bloomed with strong roots and grew into a massive tree
“That tear was shed for you my friend,” the eagle said looking into my eyes
“When you wake remember what you have seen and heard here
Respect others even when they are evil to you, be a good man
And this tree will spread seeds and those seeds will grow
Soon a forest of hope will grow, and love will replace hate
Giving will replace greed and Life will replace death
And when you stumble I will be there to help you soar
For now and always my spirit will be your guide”

At that the eagle and the clearing faded and a new light entered my eyes
I got out of bed that morning a new man
Full of renewed hope and the promise of a better world
Even if I can affect only one life, give hope to someone who is down
Then the cycle of life will continue and the forest will grow
I will continue my life sharing with those around me
This renewed hope I have been given
Reminding each person that God has not forsaken us
But it is us who has forsaken him
My vision quest continues
With the eagle as my guide
