Here, my daughter looks at me
her eyes like mine
yet longer-lashed
We share this similarity
the only one.

She is fair and I am dark
my skin is pale, hers glows
I'm the mouse
she's stronger, and she knows
and yet her eyes like mine
look out
at the world we share.

And sometimes I see wonder
as if she can't accept
that one day she
might look like me
that's many years away

Meanwhile she smiles
And her eyes like mine
are set in a youthful frame
and if she looks at my own mother
Oh! her eyes are the same.
