I saw him there
Gun in his hand
His eyes so young and full of fear
In his veins pumped blood
In his brain was his memories of mother, lover, and friends

He saw me there
Gun in my hand
My eyes so young and full of fear
In my veins pumped blood
In my brain was my memories of mother, lover, and friends

We both were there
Guns in our hands
Our eyes saw each other
Blood pumped faster in our veins
Our brains forced our bodies into action, I fired first

I saw him there
Gun on the ground
His eyes were blank and stareing
His veins pumped blood to the ground
His brain was blank, the memories no longer there

I was there alone
Gun in my hand
My eyes full of tears
My veins still pumped blood
My brain imbeds the image of his eyes, his face, his blood

One moment in time, eternity in the mind. So sorry, if this is true my heart bleeds for you, if fiction, you have wrapped me in a nightmare. I hope it is the latter. great heart piercing poem.

extremely chilling and real - reminds me of the boys I knew who went to Vietnam, never the same when they got back again.

It's called defense Bertram..It would either be you or him...You did the right thing...that is NOT killing..your country sent you there..not the same thing..I pray some of these bad memories are lessened by writing them out..keep writing..it is a great healing tool....no one knows that more than I do...Floria

I've never personally known this experience,
but you've described it so effectively that
I can see what you went through.
And...it IS hauntingly and tragically sad...
