It doesn’t have to be pretty
It doesn’t even have to be funny
It certainly doesn’t have to rhyme
This thing we call poetry
It has only one requirement
Only one ‘has to’ that I have ever found
That is that it has to come from inside
Inside that place that makes you write
That makes you have to write
It doesn’t have to be heavy, we may not
Feel the urge to be deep and relevant
It doesn’t have to be erotic, or symbolic
Or any of those ‘ic’s’, just has to be what
Is inside you and has to come out
I’m not saying we always write that way
Sometimes I write something that doesn’t
Even want to come out, it really fights me
But I write it because I need to write
Wake up the muse who seems to sleep a lot
It’s just my luck I get damned sleeping beauty
As a muse, she spends more time snoring than
A street walker does whoring but I keep on
Prodding her, pushing her, tickling her nose
Anything to get her moving, but like I said
We can write for fun, for any reason but no
Matter what we tell ourselves about why we
Write, we write because we have to, need to
Can’t be whole without it, and that comes
From inside, where its all happening
So Josie, when someone hurts your feelings
And you want to scream and yell and bitch
Go ahead and do it, cause even though we get
More rejections than acceptance, we still are
Offering a part of ourselves to someone
Its almost more intimate than sex
And yes we feel rejected, I throw tantrums
I’m worse than I would ever be if a man turned
Me down for sex, I’d just say he doesn’t know what
He’s missing, but when someone turns down
My writing, I say ‘what’s wrong with me, with
What I write, do I have any talent, should I quit’
It’s about that time that my muse finally drags her ass
Off the sofa and helps me write something that makes
Me look at it and say ‘damn yes I can write’ and if they
Don’t see it, must be something wrong with their eyes
So Josie, you can write, you need to write, you write
Things that make me say ‘wow’
So keep it up and forget the rejections
That’s what keeps us strong, girl friend

I like this, I write sometimes what I feel that others are feeling, maybe I am wrong, or maybe I am right, I just write. Then let everyone else have a say. That is when the real fun starts. Otherwise, what's the point?

Sue, outstanding advice. Bobbie, you are right everybody has an opinion. We will all go through life with our successes and failures. For every success their is usually many failures. We should not get down on ourselves because Miss or Mister so and so didn't like what we wrote or how we wrote it. That is just too damn bad. I have learned over the years that as long as my writing pleases me that's all that matters. When you write a poem or a story, read it and say,"Wow, did I write that" i'll get off my soapbox now but remember glory will come in time but acceptance has to begin within yourself. Love and Peace all.

The first thing I taught my writing class was that everyone has an opinion (any of you former service men care to elaborate on the military version) and that nobody's counts as much as the writers. Since I'm a book reviewer I know from wence I speak! Good advice you gave, hope Josie takes it!

Gee I did not think the man rejected any one. It was just a response. Maybe I am thinking of someone else? If so sorry. I do believe she should write what ever she wants to, however.
