someone told me today
my fear of storms was
irrational
exCUSE me
irrational???
they said i choose to be afraid
why do some things
scare you
and other things don't
i'm a stormphobic
major LEAGUE
pure t chicken
y'all just don't KNOW
i FREAK
when it storms
my family
people at work
think it's funny
hey lookit karla
ha ha
IT AIN'T FUNNY TO ME
been scared of storms
all of my life
can remember being petrified
of nighttime storms
being awakened by
vivid flashes of lightning
sudden cracks of thunder
aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh
screamin' bloody murder
'til mom came upstairs
turned on the light
i'm safe now
didn't dawn on me that
the power could go out
oh well
as long as the light's on
i'm safe
nearly 44 years old
and i'm
still scared
still petrified
of storms
it's gotten worse
since movin' to texas
twenty years ago
twenty years
that have
intensified my fear
of storms
'cause they get some WHOPPERS here
vivid lightning
the ugliest skies you've ever seen
black orange purple green
ALL AT ONCE
clouds swirlin'
wind howlin'
lightnin' pulsebeatin' 'cross the sky
when the skies go green
watch out
it's fixin' to come
a HUMDINGER of a cloud
mebbe some hail
mebbe severe winds
mebbe a tornado
YOU NEVER KNOW what green skies bring
there are no basements
here in my part of texas
that's just ducky
livin' in the middle of
tornado alley
and there's
NO PLACE TO HIDE
in the middle of
tornado
alley
no basements
no underground shelters
no hidey-holes
when severe weather warnings
are issued
they ALWAYS tell you
go to the basement
that's great if you can find one
or the lowest floor
center room
my center room
lowest floor
is a teenytinyclaustrophobic-sized
half bath
*i can't breathe*
crazynutsidiotic
been indirectly hit by lightning
twice
both times in 1977
that was NOT a good year
well mebbe it was
'cause i survived
HA
been in three tornadoes
one in ohio--1977
told you that wasn't a good year
two in texas--1983
didn't see it
but you could hear it
the hail bustin' out windows
the shriekin' of the winds
the thunder of my heart
and the second in 1996
right here at home
in burleson texas
9:45 at night
AT NIGHT
no warning
whhhooooooooooooooooooo
tornado sirens wail
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
ohdang oh crud
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
hidin' in the bathroom
prayin' like anything
DON'T LET IT HIT HERE
but it did
rrrrippped off the roof
zip
bye bye roof
upstairs
the rain fallin'
flooded down into
my apartment
THROUGH THE CEILING LIGHT FIXTURES
water and electricity
DON'T MIX
somebody told me today
my fear of storms was
irrational
they said i choose to be afraid

Karla, everyone has fear. It's not the fear, it's the way you handle it that makes you the person. Look at the young soldiers fighting Saddam, they may end up shot, blown to pieces and whatever but they still fight.
This is what you have to do, keep fighting and praying for the best. You'll be okay, let your faith help you be a hero to yourself. Love, peace and happiness. Grady

Karla, if you choose to be afrid of stoms then I chose to have breast cancer! Some things just are! Only a fool would laugh at someone who had such a deep seeded fear! You do what ever it takes to make it through each one, and the hell with the idiots!

I love storms, Except the tornadoes you have described. Since I have moved to Texas we have had some whoppers here near Fort Worth haven't we Karla.

We all have fears of some sort. I, too, am afraid of thunders and lightnings ever since I was a little girl.

Knowing Texas and Ohio tornados kid, you have a reason to be scared sh*tless. They are wicked.

I don't suppose being told that the thunder was..."Just the brownies bowling..." would be any help? No? I didn't think so...

Karla, thanks for your sweet words on my page...Now I loved this expressive poem with so much imagery..I used to be deathly afraid of storms so I "know" the feeling here...you tremble...and I dont know what happened to me..but I am not afraid anymore..I actually love storms now..but not tornadoes..they are a bit much to take...I hope one day you can conquer this fear also..your dad is still in my prayers..floria

Oh my, That wasn't very nice of them to say, I love storms, something about them just bring me out to enjoy Nature's fury, but I would never tell someone their fear is irrational...now spiders on the other hand...
Ha! We all have our fears, Love this poem, felt like I was in the middle of one!

(((karla))) i am sorry you were told this; that person probably doesn't know what it is like to be scared. i know how you feel, as i am scared of storms too (but NOT to the extent you are; still, you have to admit that i AM scared of storms, right??). don't let others' comments bring you down; you are better than that! stay strong in your beliefs and convictions, and know that i WILL be there for you through stormy times and calm times! i love you with all my heart and soul! love, your twin, karen lynn. (((HUGS))) :) as for the poem, it was very emotional, and it expressed your fears well. loved it, especially the part of the tornado sirens wailing off. that was cool! WOOOOOOOOOooooooooOOOOOOo.... (grins) :) terrific write, karla! :)
