Print Save Become a Fan
This is a repost of a poem I wrote when I was in Germany participating in support for Enduring Freedom.
The flightline is blinding
Eyes feel like their bleeding
From the groundís white glare
Charlestonian heat is no joke.
And at the same time, teeth gritting
ĎCause the sweat is slipping
into my eyes.
But thatís ok; itís for my country.
Hands are cramping from gettiní it done
Makiní it happen so they wonít tax us.
ďFix it yesterday!Ē but by the book.
Donít they see you can't do both?
Iíll find a way; itís for my country.
Sure, the others like to laugh at us.
ďDamn chair Force got it easy.Ē
Did they say that when I said bye again?
And see you next season.
Iím here every other one.
Pilots canít fix Ďem
As good as they break Ďem..
Iím going away; itís for my country.
When I get home,is it the same?
Do they remember?
Am I almost an uncle to them?
And another birthday gone.
I hope he likes this toy car;
5th one this year.
And sorry, hon, they don't sell dolls
In sandy, dry places.
I had to stay; itís for my country.
I drank for Jesus in winter again
At the bar, with the boys
weíre all pretending to be hard.
But all at once, we make that face.
The one where we see, in all it's glory,
Visions of family dancing in our heads.
Even the singles have something to lose.
Miss home and familiar streets, too.
They find a way; Itís for their country.
Whether itís two jets falling or
UN calling or
Someone just needs an ass-kicking,
weíll find a minute to go.
I signed up for this, class and benefits
(Iíve learned my lesson)
The chance to see the world;
The chance to aid and bomb it.
I know what Iím defending. Better them before it becomes us once more.
Thatís what we learned last fall.
Iíll bitch, but itís the American way; do it for the country.
