winter 1983
carswell air force base
fort worth texas
my duty station
i am a medical services specialist
a medic
or on really bad days
a bedpan pusher
workin' the medical floor
ward 2-b
2-b or not 2-b
that is the question
the hospital i work at
usaf rgn hosp carswell
is old
and kinda run down
but we provide excellent service
at least we try to
to our active duty
and dependents
been workin' 12 days straight
and i'm tired
finally finally
get a day off
i'm gonna sleep
i'm wiped
sound asleep
someone's bangin' at my door
in the barracks i live in
lemme lone
karla ya gotta phone call
lemme lone
lemme sleeeeeep
it's the hospital
ya gotta go to work
what time is it
0900 hours
nine in the morning
awwwwwww man
air force says ya gotta work
ya gotta work
i get up
get dressed
look outside
major ice storm
everything coated
in a solid sheet of white
i don't have a car
gotta walk
three miles
slip and sliiiide
my way there
without bustin' my yo-yo
get to work
glad ta see ya
three medics that live
off base
couldn't make it in
they're gonna try
but it will be later
when they come in
if they come in
sorry 'bout that
know it was your day off
*yeah WAS*
but we sure need your help
get into bathin' patients
checkin' vital signs
checkin' i.v.'s and n.g.'s
checkin' catheter bags
all the fun stuff
doin' paperwork
always always paperwork
finally around 1100 hours
two of the medics finally
show up
the captain of the ward
a nurse
very sweet lady
on ward 2-b *or not 2-b*
tells me go home
you've got the rest of the day
thanks for coming in
i'm outta there
walkin' home
cut through the parkin' lot
base headquarters
who comes out but the
base commander
a full bird
he's an officer
i'm not
gotta salute
feet shoot out from under me
i fall
landin' flat on my back
still holdin' the salute
the commander cracks up
whaddaya call that airman
a salute sir
he's dyin' laughin'
i'm goin' ow
get up
say let's try this again
*salute* from me
*salute* from him
he turns around
feet go out from under him
he falls out
lands flat on his back
i'm doin' everything i can
to keep from laughin'
are you all right sir
he shoots me a glare
you laughin' at me airman
*mumbles* no sir
are you sure
*mumbles* yes sir
why ain't you openin' yer mouth
*mumbles* i know better sir
'cause if i'd opened my mouth
i'd a-died laughin'
a full bird
bustin' his ass
now that's funny

LM*O! love the title; it fits the nature of this poem perfectly! what a riotous write! could just imagine that "full bird" bustin' his yo and you trying all you possibly can to keep from busting a gut! i can see WHY you mumbled "no, sir" or "yes, sir" under your breath 'coz I would be bustin' my gut with laughter! you know me; whenever i see someone fall, or else if *i* fall, you KNOW there is bound to be some hysterical, out of control gigglin' from ME! right? :) love these air force tales; bet you have a MILLION of 'em! :) would like to pitch an idea to you..could you do one on kitty in the air force? that would be FUNNY! :) "AWRIGHT, airman first class purrbucket..drop and give me 50 for purrin' out of order!" screams the t.i. :) thanks for sharing this whimsical write; you sure do have a gift for storytelling! :) outstanding work, karla! :) love, and (((HUGS))), your twin, karen lynn. ((((SAAA-LUTE))))
