There never was anything else
That I ever wanted to be
Grabbing my helmet, sliding down that pole
Riding to see what there is to see
Sometimes it is nothing
You never know until you get there
Sometimes it iss more than something
Down the throat of that beast you might stare
But no matter how hard it was
No matter how high the animal rose
You do the job with dignity and calm
Climbing that ladder, taming that hose
And there was never one other thing
That I ever wanted to see
More than the other side of that mountain
The job is what I will be
Only a few short months and already
I feel this is where Iíve always been
Monday morning we came aboard
Another day to face the beast again
We were at the door when the news came
That Tuesday morní, we should have been done
How quickly things can change and
The world was turned on its head, the ground now the sun
We turned right back around
Never a question we would return
As we grabbed our gear and climbed the rig
Never dreaming that our world might crumble and burn
Watching the city blocks fly by
We headed towards hell
An incomprehensible sight awaited
Once it starts, you canít unring that bell
We dismounted the rig one more time
Never dreaming it might be the last
We followed orders as they were given
Never knowing how soon weíd long for the past
For Monday to last an eternity
And never stretch to its end
For September 10th to go on forever
For a peace we would never find again
And there was still never anything else
Anything else I ever wanted to be
There never was another thing
That I ever wanted to see
But finding the way to the other side
Of a mountain of smoke and fire
Even this destruction, the end of our world
Will not make my heart a liar
And those caught behind that mountain
On the other side of an eternal wall
In my mind you walked out of there with me
Before those mountains could fall
Instead you were left behind
And we began to search for the lost
Each day returning disbelieving
As the mornings became laced with frost
But there never was a single thing
That I ever wanted to see
More than the fight won at the end of the day
And still this job is what I will always be
I will fight each day
The very way you taught me
I will return to that station house
And I will ride that rig until I see
Invisible brothers and sisters among our squad
Somehow still here each night
Standing shoulder to shoulder
So at the end of this job I can tell myself
We somehow pulled even in the fight
And there was never anything else
I ever wanted to be
There never was anything else
Than to know this job is me
And there was never anyone else
I ever wanted to be
