We're raising my only biological grandchild. Because of Doogie's multiple handicaps, which his mother refused to accept, we received permanent custody three weeks before his fourth birthday. He was still in diapers, couldn't make a sentence or feed himself, weighed 27 lbs. was 27 inches tall and wearing a size 18 months! Now nine, Doogie is 92 lbs., 4'6" tall and wearing a size 12-14. Blind and with cerebral palsy, he is a miracle child who has nearly caught up with his age group in all things. **This poem was written three years ago and has been published.
“Grandma, take this ring
and make a promise to me.
When you’re not married,
would you then live with me?
I can’t find a girl
who wants to cook or keep house.
but the girls think I’m a louse.
Girls want to have fun!
Who’d do my laundry, draw my bath,
tell me a story?
Help me with English and math?”
“I’m truly flattered
though forty-six years older.
These girls are too young
thus give you a cold shoulder.
Everything will change
when you approach your twenties.
Gals will turn and sigh--
and they’ll multiply . . . many.
Not everyone cooks
so just follow your heart, Dear.
A six-year-old’s young
Give yourself a few more years.”
“Grandma,” he smiled sweetly,
“you’ll always be my everything!”
