Cheer up, Mom, it's not that bad,
Your not really alone,
somewhere, probably right nearby,
another tissue is dropping
into a lovely wicker trash basket
that a smart, chic' grown daughter just like me,
bought her mother, "just because"
... her mother
was a slob.
and Somewhere else,
an alarm clock is chirping,
down a dark mysterious hall,
and another mother is home in bed, sick,
rises to its beat, to toss it against a wall
on her way to spit into the toilet,
before she greets the grand light of a gentle, blue, May day!
is changing kitty litter
while Fat Cat meows for it's food,
or bites the guardian's loving hands
because he just wants to play.
is reading a receipt,
while a kindly clerk and friendly people wait,
so that others who buy cough drops
will be charged 68 cents
instead of your 6.88.
is struggling with false teeth, trying to rip open
a new bag of grapefruit and lemon drops because
they're too tired to find the right props,
in this great game of life, with it's joy and strife,
You're not alone, you're just right.
Other people sleep soundly
on this glorious Mothers' Day,
while their neighbors play hip-hop and
swear good naturedly outside the window,
just think of it like a Play!
Yes, and no doubt, Mom
Someone is leaping up
to shut the window, too
...while someone else is going to
a bonfire on the beach
or picknicking on a sweet peach.
And I blush to think of it, but I'll bet
some folks are home, making love
well, some DO prefer to do it alone;
Hey, you're Lucky there's nobody home!
Oh, is it really that hard, Mom,
to remember the small details
in this grand mosaic of life?
While you pleasure in sleep, just think if the others
going to the kitchen for a treat.
somewhere, a refrigerator door is being opened
and a good mother is reminding her teen-age son
not to stand there with the door like that,
as she's putting the bacon away....
Oh look Mom, she's teaching him,
lovingly, about boundaries and conservation...
and, you know, somewhere
a Conservative is thinking
an Original Thought:
a conservative, sensible plan
is being made
a father is enjoying dusting
or rubbing his mother's feet.
or perhaps he has taken
her car to be fixed
oh somewhere, I can just see
a skinny mechanic washing
black grease from his hands,
while joking with the fellows,
happy and full of their workers lunches,
sharing paste-up pictures, on their walls
and I'll be someone in the bathroom is even replacing the roll!
There is laughter
and goodwill amongst Men,
and if you don't like the city Mom,
how bout the country?
where a robust rooster
mates with its happy hen
and just imagine, later,
a farmer with big warm, friendly hands,
and take her 2 eggs
and fry them in his very own pan
and he will whistle a snappy tune,
because he can do this without
breaking the yolks,
just like his father
and the father before him,
and all of the ancestors will be watching and clapping
...because somewhere, across the land, at the very same time,
a teen age couple will be napping!
and someone else will slapping
a mosquito while
perhaps in Your town,
a father is whistling and sweeping
and a mother is snoring and sleeping....
oh somehow, you can say,
Someday, you'll be happy to pay
it won't matter as much,
it wont hurt like today,
Let bygones be bygones,
make the bed that you lie in,
run outside, here you can borrow my pumps!
and have a grand time, go dance in the park,
you don't forget to say:
"oh somewhere, there is a land,
THIS land OH! where it never ever does go gray!"
