blanket of love

road trip with friends
rest stop last one forty two miles
and we are
stretching laughing free from
confines free from watching asphalt
zoom by
taking a rest
fresh air
and I notice
a man
opening the door for his lady
and I notice her ankles, swollen as she steps out
his hand on her elbow
and
they are not old
but he gently helps her
walks her slowly and waits
escorts her back
and I am shy with my watching
but I cannot stop
I know I am staring but there is no stopping
he takes a basket a blanket
and laughing he flings it wide
and
wraps her lap
and then on bent knee
he wraps
her
ankles in his blanket of love
and the look on his face
is
no less than
adoration
and I want to be her
swollen ankles and all
he opens sandwiches spreads a feast
and
we are climbing in the car
on the road again
and for a second he feels me
looks up makes contact
and I nod and he smiles
and I watch as he cuts her sandwich
and offers
his
love

my mother used to cut my sandwich in an X and I always thought that was so gay, that when I grew up I eat my bread uncut. Wish she had told the doctor that delivered me that.

Would love to see this display of genuine love and affection more often. I love the way you see these things in their existence for they do serve as evidence that love conquers all superficial barriers.

Josefina,
I feel your writing style shines and glimmers upon and within this delicately woven piece. Not all eyes would have captured such an exquisite tribute to love and adoration standing tall, I salute your eye not all have, may you see well, then record what you see! No more can mere man ask....

Josie, I'm awash in memory trying to think of the last time somebody cut my sandwich. Time for me to have a little talk with the boyfriend, methinks.

P.S. I liked yesterday's poem, too!

i would like to be her too, labelle, but i would need help out of the car; i can't get up very well from low spots! :) but once i have my crutches ready, then i am okay, and i can get myself out; it's when i try to raise my hips and seat from the seat when i have the most trouble! LOL good write, josie; nice to see gallantry still prevelent in today's society! :)
