There’s a place I go as oft as I can
To lose my mind, temporarily ban
Thoughts of the world, its hustle, bustle,
Think of nothing but the water’s rustle.

Water guarded by granite monoliths
Among trees and ferns that hide myths
Of wild things that make bold forays
To devour -- no conscience, no mores.

Yes, a river runs through it, gurgling free,
And as I watch closely, it talks to me.
It tells of its past, now far down stream,
And of its future, north in a dream.

Of thirst, bright-eyed deer quenching,
Swim across, shake off their drenching,
Of a lone eagle scanning for prey,
Muskrat found safety, if only that day.

Of hump-backed otters, gleefully at play,
They fish, chase, and slither that way,
They roll, slash and dive for fun,
Chide each other on what’s been won.

I look up rippled river on silvered glint,
Past shoal deposits of shist and flint,
A calmer pool, wood duck pair floats,
A jolting tint to their colored coats.

A long-legged heron lazily glides,
Just above the current easily rides,
Seeing me, startles, swerves in flight,
River-wide streak defecated white.

They say cougars roam around here,
I’ve seen none, won’t walk in fear,
But black bears I’ve had to face,
Add intrigue to this wilderness place.

Yes, a river runs through it, gurgling free,
And as I watch closely it talks to me:
“It’s fragile where you wish to be,
So take concern, tread carefully.”

I reluctantly leave with backward look,
To burn in memory the picture took,
Can hardly wait ‘til its time to return,
Know what the river tells me to learn.

Just my kind of place...Your imagery, the satisfaction and serenity, all make me want to return. Excellent!

I have hiked many a mountain, but there are so many, many more!

I used to go to those places often to cleanse my mind of technology talking. But now, years from walking, it is harder to put an ear to nature talking.

But I remember...

Beautiful, Leland.

The love of nature shines through this poem with eloquence and passion. For an all too brief moment we are transported to your place of magic. What a delight!

When I first got AD's notice letting me know that you had posted this poem, you had titled it "Power Poem", and took us there through a link. Upon following it, I found myself in a very special place, indeed - and also, curiously, back in time to the very day I joined AD! Then, I immersed myself in that "power" - yes, places like the one you so beautifully depict, my dearest friend, do indeed empower us, as they fill us with amazing energy, as opposed to certain other places that weaken us, because they drain us of that same energy without which we can't truly live. Now, that you brought what really is "A Special Place" to the present moment, I'm happy to immerse myself in it powerful serenity again... and I guess this will be a place I'll revisit often in the future, such is the wonderful feeling of fulfillment it instills in me. Aaaahhhhhh!!! No wonder you always leave it with a reluctant backward look!
Lots of {{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}} and love,

Wow! I've seen a cougar, about a block from our house in the woods. Beautiful animal, we stared, neither fearful of the other, until it walked away.
I love your descriptive narrative . . . gorgeous. Great poem.
When in my 'imaginative' corner :), do drop in. Even I never know what may pop into my poems next :>!

I read the poem and then your bio and then the poem again. Made up my mine, you have a brilliant mind that really holds many ideas at once, and then sorts them out into wonderful coherent patters of thought. A pleasure to read your work. Bill

What glorious word pictures you have given us, with the expertise of rhythm and rhyme, stunning! I used to live in NJ, took all the turnpikes to Illinois often, and saw the Rappahanock River signs, brought back lots of good memories. don't know if it's the same you mentioned in link...
