These are my "Stone Children"...My Young friends...

"You Don't Know Me!"
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

"You don't know me!
He yells and turns away quickly,
To hide the glistening in his eyes...
"I can be mean!
I can be tough!
He warns me...
And I see him shift his weight,
His muscles coiled and tight...

This boy-child-man,
Spoiling for a fight,
Wanting to draw me out,
Stand up to his challenge...

I cool his fire with praise,
"Yes, I see that you are strong,
I concur with him,
I see how much you can lift..."
I shake my head and whistle softly,
I'm glad you're here to help me..."

He relaxes a bit,
But not enough to let it go-
"You don't know me", he says again,
Sadly now,

He warns me then,
In that low, soft voice of his,
"You've never seen me fight!
I won't let them beat me,
I'll never stop!"

His rage builds again,
His eyes narrow,
And he clenches his fists...
"No body knows me! he rages...

Taking a chance...
I reach out,
Touch him,
Make contact...
"You're right," I agree,
But I'm learning more every day..."

He winces and pulls away,
Then drops his eyes,
Not yet ready to let me see his pain,
But I catch his smile,
As he runs away...

You can almost feel the boy's anguish and his shame over his yearning for understanding, suppressing his softer instincts! Nicely done! Sentimental doesn't have to mean sappy... A Very Good write!

Insightful, Retta. It only takes one person to see beyond the anger of a child to make a difference in the outcome. Bravo.

Oh, Retta.. the insight, the sensitivity you have written this with.. I felt it! You have honored the written word with your honesty and profound understanding of this "boy-child-man".. in a few verses, you have introduced me to a living, breathing soul..
