An Unexpected Loss

In memory of Mrs. Nolan

Eight AM we’d all come in
A clean blackboard, every desk in place
More than math
We’d expect to see, her smiling face
Forty-five minutes couldn’t go
Fast enough it seemed
Now to look back it’s gone
Faster than we would have dreamed

A silent lifetime
Of future memories
We cared too much to think
Of her us losing
The classroom blinds are drawn
The classroom door is closed
The ghost of time remains
As more and more memories unfold

Mornings came and went
We didn’t respect those days
Years later it seems
We’re following the same old ways
A normal day we thought
Not ready for the huge surprise
We lost a friend of the past
We finally opened our eyes

A silent lifetime
Of future memories
We cared too much to think
Of her us losing
The classroom blinds are drawn
The classroom door is closed
The ghost of time remains
As more and more memories unfold

A tragic day that day
An unbelievable thought to intake
We never looked to the future
Never knew what was at stake
We closed our eyes, breathed deep
Asking ourselves if it’s true
Still today we think back
Disbelieving what we lost was you

A silent lifetime
Of future memories
We cared too much to think
Of her us losing
The classroom blinds are drawn
The classroom door is closed
The ghost of time remains
As more and more memories unfold

Goodbyes may come and go
They’re not forever
We’ll meet another time
To share each other
An unexpected loss
May bring a tear or two
Keep memories at heart
As we now remember you

A silent lifetime
Of future memories
We cared too much to think
Of her us losing
The classroom blinds are drawn
The classroom door is closed
The ghost of time remains
As more and more memories unfold

A silent lifetime
Of future memories
We cared too much to think
Of her us losing
The classroom blinds are drawn
The classroom door is closed
Our hearts hold memories
As the future unfolds
