Some Specimens Resist Stain

A spider’s web outlasts the strongest steel
A simple vine may twine a thousand years.
A snake sheds its skin and goes on to grow more.
But look under fragile if you want to find human.
For glass blown into workable, and unworkable, shapes,
to toss on a planet to guard or poison
while jousting with tsunamis, droughts and blizzards.
Not craze too much while having to squabble
for scraps. A job, a doctor, a coat that zips,
milk or egg for a child. Or, among the fortunate
in fortune land, the right school, the right address,
the right brand or a box in a sports arena.
A bonsai tree less than ten inches tall
graces a well-off home generations.
A well-fed cat begins its nine lives
jeering from the warmth of a big-buck condo
as alley toms and dream-on tigresses hiss and claw
for hints of tuna on lettuce or blue furred bread
from a dumpster waiting to be emptied
by a machine gets more fat and attention
than they ever got. But they have nine.
The Tower of Pizza leans on.
Tourists still get drizzled on beneath Natural Bridge.
Manhattan’s Twin Towers are gone.
We throw ourselves away, we break
each other into pieces, we drown
our sorrows and set fire to our joy. Shoot up,
shoot down. Even the sun owns limited prospects.
Milky Way decidedly up for grabs.
Most of our rockets and shuttles last,
but Third World children, if they last
at all, are lucky to reach ten.
A month, a year, three, four, five and a half.
Polyester can be handed down.
A good wool suit. A silk tie.
Wrap them in a sealable bag, then pack
with care in cedar or an extra large safe
labeled fire-proof, not fire-resistant.
Diamonds, gold and other precious objects
these days should be kept on the self.
Please disregard all the extra cost.

What is the point of all this lasting
if it has no point. I ask you.
Myself. Is an answer, could be
we are the web, the vine, the snake,
the cat, the bonsai. Dust that if not in charge
can value its role in creating tomorrow.
Work to spin webs that are designed
to catch food for all, yet set no traps
to maim and kill for fun and profit.
Value life over loss.
