This poem was written when my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He did get a chance to read it and requested that it be read at his funeral. That's probably the greatest honor I've ever had.
The rustling of the turning pages
tells me change is coming soon.
The grand design is still in place
like the phases of the moon.
But this closing of a chapter
leaves me different than before.
It's not the end of the journey,
but the opening of another door.
One that leads you far beyond me
and I long to follow through.
But I must carry on another path
with my treasured memories of you.
Know this as you cross through the gate,
I love you with all my heart.
And though the void you leave will be great,
you live deep inside my heart of hearts.
And there are some things you will not take,
like the ability to love and be loved - a lesson you taught me well.
And that strength comes in patience,
and that the power of a smile never fails.
My words now offer but a glimmer
of the treasures you've given to me.
The greatest was probably the gift of yourself
that made me all that I'll ever be.
Know that I walk in the footprints you've left
and that the story will still go on.
It lives as you do, forever
in your beautiful, tender life's song.
"I will miss you" seems so understated
as you can see by the tears in my eyes.
But I take some comfort just in knowing
that I'll see you on the other side.
