India lost to Australia in the finals of the 2003 world cup. This poem is a kind of soothing message to the nation.
Loss in World Cup
So what if inspite of playing well in the tournament, we ended up as the runners up.
It is still creditable to have reached the finals of the world cup.
It is sad that in the finals we had to face defeat, for there were many on the way we beat,
Reaching the finals is no mean feat, beating Pakistan* for the fourth time was a real treat.
The film "Lagaan" too disappointed finally although among the contenders, it deserved domination.
That time too we consoled ourselves that at least it received an Oscar nomination.
Speculation is rife whenever there is a serious loss.
There are many of the opinion that we were done in by the toss.
Saurav may have had his own reasons for opting to bowl when he had to choose
He could have been more careful because this was a match the team just could not afford to lose.
Although an aggressive and attacking captain,
perhaps the law of averages caught up with Saurav Ganguly.**
Although an outstanding player of spin, for him the toss proved to be the real googly***
Although from the Australian viewpoint it was proper, it is sad that their skipper
Chose this particular day to be so dapper
Learning from the experience would be better than to rant and shout.
Wouldn't it be heartening if we too at crucial stages could force an effective runout.
Considering that the Australians are outstanding, vast improvements are needed in our fielding
The fact that there the players deserved a little scolding
may be agreed by no less than Michael Holding.
It is sad that when it came to the crunch,
Our bowlers could not sustain their performance and became an ineffective bunch.
It is a lesson for the future that on the day of reckoning.
We just cannot afford any slackening.
It is sad because our bowling in this particular world cup.
For once somewhat matched the exploits of our formidable batting lineup.
So what if were disappointed by Srinath, Harbhajan, Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra
We continued to be bowled over by the ever gorgeous and charming Mandira.****
Whenever there is a serious loss, some fans' reaction reminds of an earthquake's tremor
We have to be good losers; if not humor, we can remind ourselves of Mandira's glamour.
Some fans may not be ready, to acknowledge the benign presence of that lady.
The cricket team's steadiness apart, it is with her that other fans were wanting to get steady.
(Cricketers may or may not be missed;
the fact she will be may perhaps be conceded by Bishen Singh, he other Bedi.)
Whether it is a glorious shot, a thrilling run out, a crucial wicket or a diving catch
Mandira's equally captivating performance on Television will be difficult to match.
Remembering the famous "Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi"
Let it not be said that "Mandira bhi kabhi cricket me thi"
If I may tell Mandira in Hindi, "Aapko us serial me jitna achcha lagtaa hai Mihir"
"Cricket fans ko bhi aap utni hi acchi lagne lagi hai, kaise kare Zaahir"
If "Ability has to be supported by visibility"; then, in addition to cricketers
Her presence on the television screen is something that matters.
In addition to what happened on the cricket field, it was her presence that thrilled
Don't let her go; her absence will create a void that may never get filled.
In addition to our most belligerent and potent pace*****,
if in cricket somebody deserves a permanent place
It is Mandira's pleasant and smiling face matched equally by her manners and grace.
In addition to watching the outswinger and Incutter, in addition to many a dashing cricketer
There is no doubt that Mandira too made us feel better, don't remove her and shatter
In discussing our loss in the finals and the world cup, I can add many an annexure
Cricketers and their form may come and go, let Mandira remain a permanent fixture.
To face defeat or to foster the cricket fever, she must continue forever
As it is she has come too late, better late than never, retaining her is worth the endeavor
Considering "Sweet are the fruits of adversity" is almost a norm
So what if our bowlers didn't perform; at least Virender Schewag****** returned to form.
Jokes and humor apart, it is needless to mention.
For losing the world cup finals there cannot be any consolation.
Glamorous or otherwise, who can comfort a billion strong cricket loving nation.
It is not anybody's presence but watching a thrilling match in itself is the biggest elation.
The disappointment of a billion strong country
Can never be made up anyone's presence or poetry.
Our performance before the finals made everybody beam, loss may not be as bad as it may seem
We should still be proud of our team.
Irrespective of what happened in the finals, a majority should be of the view
That the cricketers did very well; let us tell them that we are still proud of you.
Unlike some politicians and others, at least now no one can doubt your merit
Our other disappointments make cricket mandatory; please continue to espouse its spirit.
