FAITH IN REASON

The mind of man: logic assimilating fact,
Powerful analyzer, and imagery backed!
Sprung full blown from the brow of Zeus?
Or crawled with pain through eons of use,

Accumulating strength, growth compounding
Minute increments, past failures confounding.
Each discipline’s technology another’s gain,
Reason added knowledge, improved his brain,
One successful step and then the next,
Millions of years before there was text.

And man did evolve, trunk of life’s tree,
His mind grew, answers could readily see,
To questions of the works of the earth,
What is its mass and what is its girth,
Knowledge he’s steadily gained,
Added to it, his database maintained.

But on questions of life, and death and pain,
What is Man’s role and what is his gain,
And where does he go when life’s all done,
And what has he lost and what has he won?

Answers to these, from unseasoned brain,
Like children, ignorant of evolution’s chain,
Passed to us with strict instruction:
Supernatural genesis or face destruction!

Oh, there was a time when man was lacking
In knowledge, confidence, and spiritual backing,
When childlike, he was fed with a spoon.
Just needed a while to think and fine-tune
And develop answers in line with truth,
By observation from the time of his youth,
In the sense of our species and as a man,
He’s evolved and developed fast as he can.

Faith in reason he’s nurtured and grown
Harvested its fruit from the seed he’s sown
In spite of Supernaturalists, who at every turn,
Have threatened thinking with hell to burn,
Insisting Faith in Ignorance is the only path
To salvation and glory to escape God’s wrath!

Well, what is it they crave the most?
Things they call heaven and the Holy Ghost?
Things of which they know nothing at all,
These they’ve invented, self-thought to stall.

To preserve dominance over man and wife
Invented their story of everlasting life,
With them as gatekeeper, police and guard,
Making their rules, enforcing them hard.

Having their say has become a tradition,
Damning self-thought to hell and perdition
And with the unknown being such a fright,
Poor soul with nothing grasps offered light.

But one nasty fly’s corrupted their ointment,
One dirty little secret still has appointment
To come from the closet at appropriate date
And let those who think, see their real fate.

That dirty little secret for ages held down,
Now’s being broadcast to country and town.
It’s this: Faith in Ignorance, accepted blind,
Leaves no rational rejection, not any kind.

That’s right! Any faith, dogma, belief, or creed,
With some logic behind it, or weak as a reed,
Must be accepted, imbedded and avowed—
With Faith in Ignorance, no discrimination’s allowed.

Not with logic, observation, nor thinking about,
You must take it to heart with never a doubt,
And cling to every tenet that’s ever been stated,
The most popular on earth, or totally deflated.

You say, “It’s just a silly sleight of word,
A person can’t believe everything that’s heard.”
He can’t, he won’t, will never, is the bottom line,
But a trusted one’s unexamined word — fine.

It’s mom or pop or preacher’s confident roar,
Usually taught by no stranger to his door.
Too young to analyze, or question vested rule,
He accepts dogma, no choice in their school.

Accepting their truth, mind flexible and young,
Opaque millstone ‘round his neck is hung
Decorated and nurtured, ribboned and boxed,
To be held very tightly, but never unlocked.

Did what he was told from baby to grown,
Was sure his faith was a thing of his own,
The truth is he was just passing along,
The same falsehoods, hammer and tong.

So how did this, a generational deception,
Gain its foothold, with such ready reception?
Well, how is any lie started on its way?
Has a grain of truth, or offers sunshine ray.

If no answer’s found for questions too deep,
Or loss is so heavy that it makes us weep,
Or the truth’s not something we care to hear
We’ll cast about, grasping straws with fear.

We’ll cling to anyone with help to offer.
Friend they could be, or lining their coffer
With valuables, or stature in hierarchy
Of career ladder founded on malarkey.

Who resist with everything in their power,
Any claim search, or breach of their tower —
“It’s our turf, and not your place to wonder,
Challenge won’t be tolerated, by Thunder.”

So tell all your friends, shout without shame,
Without logic examining oft touted claim,
It has no truth, what’s said, just ignore,
And go on and find what else is in store.

But if Faith in Ignorance we unjustly blame,
Said some things that come up lame,
And in their dogma truth does reside,
Then what in hell were they trying to hide?
