Mountain Climbing

For those who battle illness, the lonliness is the worst symptom. (My family is usually terrific, but occasionally they bale out on me.) Depression and self-pity are hard to shake---there are very few, even in my beloved family, that can walk through that valley with me.

Mountain climbing by myself

despite my impoverished health--

Lonliness I dread the more

than ache of head

and muscles sore.

If I whimper or complain,

You parachute from the plane

As though my condition

Endangers your ambition.

When the pinnacle I mount,

When victory I gain,

I'll forgive you

for leaving me

alone with my pain.

My spirit grows stronger as my

body betrays

Enriched by only God,

I will live above the fray.
