Princess's Hand

I am a Knight, keen and able
from a land of wondrous fable
of flying dragons belching fire
of armour, lance and squire

Twas on a day of fluffy white cloud
that on my charger I rode so proud
a King's daughter I set off to woo
that's what Knights are supposed to do

Words of undying love ahead I sent
as off to the southern kingdom went
once there patiently I had to wait
before I could follow my true fate

I was passing time at a local inn
when I was disturbed by quite a din
the victim seemed some poor young maid
so rescuing Knight withdrew his blade

All around rushed away afeared to fight
crying 'if you want her good sir Knight,
then welcome but beware the curse
for a witch she be with looks like hers'

I looked at wench with figure sublime
glorious dark hair so soft and fine
when upon her face my gaze did fall
I saw that beauty had paid no call

Yet even allowing for misshapen face
there was no mistaking a certain grace
and once a few words we'd spoke
she was clearly one of the brighter folk

So when it was we came to part
some mark she'd made upon my heart
and if enchantment she used on me
it was just herself she'd made me see

Every day after we'd meet and talk
as through her great city we'd walk
by the time I was summoned to court
I knew, from my vow, escape I sought

As I stood before the Princess veiled
I prayed my quest for her had failed
upto her I strode, past tall men of rank
when the words 'Yes him' my poor heart sank

'The vow I gave to you, so I shall keep
until the day when I eternally sleep
by your side I'll be loyal and strong
Yet I must admit my heart to another belong

From the gathered group came angry cries
yet the Princess showed no surprise
and with a soft hand her veil she lifted
it was she and my dreams had been gifted
