if you've followed my writings here you well be aware of a large red mule. Red is for me a personification of my muse, and to "ride the red mule" a metaphor for the poets lifestyle {see, the Keewatin series, " journey's end" and others}

well, red wanted me to write this for ya---

clumsily crashing through the slough of meaning
trying to corral the ephemeral with a cargo net
of words the poet scatters more than he gathers

blundering through the bush the poet hunts
the hare of metaphor with an elephant gun,
the big gun shatters and scatters the quarry

sit down, sit down, young poet, lay aside net and gun.
stop your thrashing and banging. wait and the quarry
will come – come to you; to your open mind and heart.

rise up, rise up ‘prentist wordsmith! too broad
the world for three lifetime’s sojourn; you have
but one! rise up and journey to mystery and to song...

What a great poem John. There's something in here for all of us who experience writers' block from time to time; be it poetry, or WHATEVER. Nice one.

Absolutely! Love this play on words and the message is . . . oh, I guess I'll go ahead and go with the tired, but true cliché . . right on.

This has an artistic value that is priceless! I have read others too. It is a pleasure reading. Your work is GOOD.
