Two poems on the subject of birds and their songs...

(Sonnet) Copyright Sara L. Russell, 22nd June 2003

I rode the wings of night on rising air
That carried me from Africa's wild shore;
To fields of meadowsweet and maidenhair
To sing of heaven's dome and ocean's floor.
Spring greets my song with hawthorn flower and briar
Rewards my voice with nectar-tinted sun;
The thrum of earth's renewal is my lyre
As thaws begin and waters speed to run.
I sing for memories of sultry days
For zebras racing over arid planes.
I sing of England's tepid Summer haze;
Slow-strolling shire horses with plaited manes.
From heaven's heights I sing, for life's divine,
The purest voice, the lightest heart is mine.

Fly hence, rivals,
this land belongs to me,
these jagged, ragged cliffs
flanking the sea;
windward over rolling waves I fly
where the black clouds cataract the sky.

Fly hence, rivals,
I patrol these skies.
I chase the reeling moths
and dragonflies;
my shadow marks the heathers as I pass
my dread updraft makes ripples through the grass.

Fly hence, rivals,
I hold dominion here.
The wild geese spiral up
as I appear;
they scatter in the air before my eyes
for I am the master of the skies.

Well, Sara, I hope you are feeling better by now. Automobile accidents are no fun, and broken hips are definitely dangerous at any age. I hope you are up and around soon.

I don't need to say much about this. It is possibly my favorite of all your poems (since it's on my webpage, it's obvious I liked it anyway.)

Sara I would love to put the first one to a video, with a reading by you accompanied by what? Some flute music. Now who do you know that can play flute.
(I'm not sure I could spot a willow warbler amongst the others though)
Liked the second too, but it would be harder to put into a video.

These two poem have enriched my life. I have learned from them. SONG OF THE WILLOW WARBLER brings to modern language what Michelangelo brush strokes brought to the world of art. SONG OF THE EAGLE teaches rivalry and mastery in the true perspective which nature intended them. You are a master poet indeed, and I bow to your verbal perfection. I feel so blessed to have found your work.

It is an admirable Sonnet that enriches the golden page of Poetry.
It is made of true feelings of Nature with a touch of imagination;
poetized to perfection of rhyme and metrics by an inspired artist of the VERB… “Maker”… a POET.

Beautiful depicting of Nature in action… a true inspired feeling of
contemplation of beauty.

I Salute You, Master Poet Sara Russell.

May You enjoy a Long Healthy Life.

I thank You for making Poetry RICHER!
