I'm long convinced we do not "make men out of boys." Instead, we make boys and, with time, they become men. Watching my son and daughter-in-law raising my two grandsons inspired these lines.

Karen's Boys

A man-child's born; we're blest today.
So pour the wine and celebrate.
Then let us dance the night away;
'Til solid walls reverberate.

The task, for us, is clearly set:
This boy must now become a man.
And when the task is fully met
He'll be a stalwart of the clan.

A gentleman, refined, he'll be,
Displaying elan, poise, and grace.
An amalgam of two families he,
With proud heritage to trace.

We'll give him strength, and courage too.
He'll conquer all constraints and then
Success will know no Waterloo.
And he'll stand tall . . . rarest of men.

But can we mold this clay at all?
. . . .For are not men, but boys grown tall?

Gotta love it, but getting seriously, I do believe that boys need ?tending" in the ways and wheretofore of life in order to make decisions later that will not reach out and bite him. Then, hell, on the other hand, you are probably more right than I am. Good poem.
