c.2003 M. Bennett Hooper

When I find myself too old to dream action becomes my only living alternative.
When I find myself too old to dream I call upon the strength of my ancestors for whom vision was always their second sight.
They had no time to dream for they were forging a better reality.

When I find myself too old to dream every days adventure is etched more deeply in my memory bank and winters sun is welcomed from dawn to dusk as I welcome the days yet to come.
When I find myself too old to dream I look back at our historical stream and I can smile at the close of the day because of the thousands who paved my way.

Most of all I remember auntie who rescued me from the deaths door of my birth mother who left six days after I was born and marvel at my own personal survival.
And I find myself too old to dream and fashionably forge a new hopefully better reality for my grandchild..

My grandchild born into a world filled with the chaos that greed creates.
My grandchild born into a world filled by man made religious hatreds where God is on everyone’s side or so it iis proclaimed as madness is prayed into acceptability..

My grandchild born into a world where her worth need not be validated by material acquisitions or her physical beauty but by her acceptance of the responsibility of forging her own destiny.

My grandchild who in years to come when I am gone can savor my love for her that will last beyond my covered grave.
When I find myself too old to dream of a better world.
I shall welcome the sleep which is called eternal.
