a full day spread before me
sunshine and traffic light
half way there i saw the cue
prism colors waving lines
instant panic
no not now, not today
as if it was ever convenient
knowing soon the waves would arc
i'd be lost inside its pull
palms grew damp, prism pulsing
in fifteen minutes i'd be blind
that would last me near an hour
it had been months, not even once
i'd have to think it through
go beyond the prism light
command myself relax
look beyond the flashing
i still had time, could not turn back
i was closer now than farther
i looked beyond and calmed myself
i notice the auto ahead is blue
i think of blue and wonder now
as the car beside, the car behind
they are also blue
blue yes blue, letting the color
go through my mind
i nearly scream outloud
feathers blue, oh my god
it all was clear, i see the room
filled with birds, blue feathers all around
i sit on the floor, tears in my eyes
and look at you in the door
just a soft gentle smile
looking down at me
the loving gift you'd given me
was right there in my mind
i thought awhile how it felt
i thought awhile of joy
fading then back to the road
i saw the prisms gone
safely arriving my destination
i couldn't help but smile
a molted feather at my feet
just outside the door

Wow ... this explores a lot of emotional avenues. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. You captured the twists and turns of life with insight, depth, charm and compassion in this poem. Well done.

Debby, you have come a long ways since I first read one of your poems. This one keeps thew prism moving as you work through it. Very clever and well designed and executed. Bill Murray
