Love's Destiny

It’s hard to tell you anything,
You live in the now,
Never think of the future,
Yet I must,
For my destiny waits there,
That scythe edge raised so high,
Shiny and sharp,
Ready to cut out my heart,
When you depart...

You want love now,
Will have it,
Seek it out,
When it tries to flee...

But what about me...?

When you are gone,
What shall I be?
The broken heart of tomorrow,
Waits for me today...

I read something today,
Heard it too,
And somehow it struck me,
As so damn true ...

This modern age,
Where love flies by
Where all strive to make you believe
They are real,
Not just after some cyber feel...

I laugh,
And weep,
And tear my hair,
But in the end,
Life is not fair...

You come to me,
With your heart on your sleeve,
How can I look away?
How can I not stay?

I am invisible,
A group of electrons
Flying through the air,
Captured by your heart,
And I wonder why I care...

Someone said to me,
“I'm trying to be strong,
For when he is gone,
I can still live,
But never love again...”

And he said to her;
“If things don’t work out,
Can I return?
Will you keep the door open?”

And I wondered,
Why he didn't think of her...
Of what she would feel
When he left to taste the world...

And if it didn’t work out,
He would return...

I wanted to tell her,
Don’t you dare!
Let him rot in hell!

But she smiled sadly,
Knowing what I was thinking
And said;

“I love him,
And only time will tell,
If he is real,
If somehow we can manage to steal
A little happiness from the world...”

If it don’t work out,
He will return...

So the gift is his to give,
And hers to refuse,
But she won’t...
It is our destiny you see,
To love our men,
And never be loved in return…

Unless it doesn’t work out-

And it made me think of us…
Why is your happiness,
So much more important than mine?
Why would I wait for destiny to raise,
That scythe and cut out my heart?

I guess,
I too am hoping,
Things won’t work out,
And one day
You will return to me,
With your heart as a gift...

I hope I have the strength,
To refuse...

You say;
“Don’t think of the future!”
But the future is coming…
I feel it,
Here in my heart-

And I know I must be strong,
So behind every smile is sadness,
And behind every,
I love you-
Is goodbye...

Your verses flow like a streem in to heart and give some thought and memories of past.Good Retta, so good.

What a sad and emotional write. Hoping for the love of our life to stay, to come back, keeping the doors open for him. But it will never be the same again, that for sure. So rather quit and go on with our lives.

This poem could have been written about my past romances. I had felt this way so many times. I stood in her shoes and in yours...telling myself I wanted to be strong, to refuse 'him' when he came back..and they so often do - for being loved by someone is addictive.
It wasn't until I met my husband that I realized that, yes (!), there might be someone out there who isn't looking for something else. Someone who knows what he wants and who also believes in committment and love - the kind of love that is there despite the hectic days, the busy nights, the sleepiness, irritation, and simple sheer
'everydayness' of the world...a love that doesn't rely upon the 'thrill of the chase' or 'feeling romantically in love every day'...something solid.
LOL...see what you have brought out in me? Wonderful wonderful poem! ;) Silver

This is an "in your face" poem! Hats off for the phrase "cyber feel" alone!

I read something today,
Heard it too,
And somehow it struck me,
As so damn true...

How true is that?!! We often listen, but we don't always hear. Love your work, my friend.

Superb poem!Your passion was raw and intense in this one Reindeer. How well you spell out the truth of it. Most times it is the woman who waits,no sense in trying to soft soap the truth!

Retta, so painful this is to read. Mainly because we've all been there so damn many times. I feel this morning more than I would have last week, or will even next week. But for today I needed to read this. Thank you. Lisa

{{{{{Reindeer}}}}}... Sis of the troubled heart. I tried to find a line or two that expressed most the feelings I have in reading this... but there are far too many. (short of repeating the entire poem) Rising this morning to find today the same as yesterday... your words brought forth a flood of tears. Mi'lady... you have captured the essence of beings such as we from the very core. One of your best!!!
