Naive for Destiny

It was by my nature to be so nave
focused only on what was before me
while unable to see the curved horizon
concentrated on a speck in the meadow

I became a hummingbird hovering high
Mistaking the sky for a sapphire lake
The rays of the sun became a flower
piercing my eyes with golden swords
its brilliance luring me beyond instinct
until my brittle wings could flap no more

I fell back through a curtain of clouds
accelerating into the bowels of the earth
while the peripheral stars became a blur
and the light I had seen became intense

A girl with long flowing hair beckoned me
and my heart vibrated wildly in the silence
but I cast my eyes down to the darkness
hesitating until her bright shadow left me
mistaking the onset of pleasure for fear
until questions had come fast in dreams

I felt the vacuum of my hollow heart
and the emptiness of a fractured soul
not knowing the sharp pangs of desire
not seeing what lay sweet in her eyes
not feeling the softness of her hands
unaware of the perfume of her whispers

As I continued my spiral into the abyss
of ignorance and unanswered questions
following the fate of mankind before me
my wings useless against the current

I fell forever away from my tomorrow
in repeating the mistakes of the past
until I became aware of her hand in mine
all by a twist of fate that she had returned
as she smiled when she saw I was nave
when I found that her name was Destiny
