the moon looks eerie
a Halloween orange
hangs in the haze
of ominous firestorm

the mountains are burning
the wind is whipping
tongues of fire
licking it all

ash in the air
sparks and embers
no one is sure
the direction its going

oh mother why?
the humans are crying
have you no mercy
to their life and property?

she laughs like a witch
that shrills the air
sweeping her broom
stirring the air

oh sweet pea
"never you worry
your mountain is fine
I'm just doing some cleaning

it brings them together
neighbor to neighbor
they'll learn to pray
and respect each other

greater purposes exist
upon this planet
what seems like disaster
is just an awakening

to the hollow and shallow
that have no clue
greedy and monstrous
uncaring and cruel

compassion arises
as they sorrow together
no more will they take
each other for granted"

I'd like to believe
humans could change
without the drama
of "news at eleven"

distracted I'd say
by environment
yet like the statue
I stand intact

honey, I'm thinking
we'll get through this
the landscape is changing
but we aren't dead yet

I live in the northern part of the state in Sacramento and we have had our share of these firestorms from time to time but nothing like what Southern Calif is experiencing. So sad to see the loss but I am gladened when I see neighbor helping neighbor as strangers come closer together. Great write, Debby.

amen to all of this. to live in cali right now is, as you say, a lesson in learning to be a 'good neighbor'. a friend of mine just told me about the sun and the moon and ashes falling out of the sky all day...a wonderful write, poet. thank you for sharing!
