Dark, Grey, Heavy, Pregnant Sky…

Cloaked in torn, fleecy, filthy dark drapes

Befitting the ominous canvas of the Last Judgement,

Oppressing, tormenting, threatening,

Head-splitting, pain invoking misery…

The dark grey invades your mind,

Twisting its sharp claws around your brain-cells,

Tearing at neurons, tormenting your weary soul…

No escape… tentacles drag you to deepest hell…

The Valkyries ride out of Valhalla

To the crashing waves of sound of the Dies Irae,

Echoing in the depth of your troubled mind…

Gloom and doom shakes the very foundations

Upon which the Great Hall of the Gods stood

And is about to collapse, as Valhalla rises in flames

Above the crust of the trembling Earth,

Engulfing and dragging all, to witness

The Twilight of the Gods…

…Now silence…

Deep and all encompassing silence

Under the pitch darkness of the firmament…

Overwhelming, deafening, monstrous silence…

Heart-stopping silence… and then…

The sky splits open, a brilliant white light

Slices through the darkness and gloom

As the wondrous, gurgling, innocent laughter

Of a young child resonates through the ether,

Chasing the ominous drapes of gloom away…

And the sky is now azure blue, the sun shines,

The flowers of the meadows gracefully waver

Into a merry dance, bursting into a riot of colour

And the birds… oh how the birds sing in choir

And in tune and harmony with that laughter,

As it vibrates through your heart and mind and soul

Warming your entire being into a glorious smile…

…That laughter… that gurgling, heart-warming,

Crystal-clear sound that even the blessed angels envy,

Is the most precious, most beautiful sound

In the entire Universe.

Oh, I so wholeheartedly agree! A child's laughter is the last, best honesty on earth. Wow, Peter - such brilliant imagery you have penned here. This was a delight to read.
