In April of 1983 I was sitting in the cafeteria at Edwards Air Force Base when I got the word that 16 Americans had died in a terrorist attack on the United States Embassy in Beirut. As my heart sunk to the floor, I was stirred in my spirit to record these words in requiem for the fallen soldier.

I feel before me the earth's contour
Converging at my person
I pause and rage in disbelief
Of this precarious situation

A preponderance of evidence
Has led me to believe
That death could be my next door neighbor
In rambunctious befuddlement, forever if I live
These seconds I will never savor

Auspicious are the men
Who in these dire moments they may perish
To elude time from the torment
For the loved ones whom they cherish

A graphic depiction of dilapidation
Distraughting, yet true
Disenchantment has befallen
There’s tragedy in Beirut

We stand erect, our heads to the sky
In requiem for the fallen soldier.
