thanks to deb
for carol

two years before,
you had carried me with you
and would carry me still
for just under four months
til the agonizing labor
extracted me from you
and we've been apart now
some twenty-seven years.
i once heard a poem about a mom
who drew pictures
on plain paper napkins
when her daughter was small
threw them out to the garbage
parts of her former self, but
her daughter would save them
and down would she delve
for these ambivilant treasures
neither happy nor sad but
indifferent, bits of life
that she never had--
and what of you, mom,
what of you?
long ago,
i bought a journal
to encourage your writing
you said, you loved english,
back in high school
a girl
wrote poetry and prose
which i'd never seen,
just medical records
on lined pages,
black ink
your cursive
so practical, disappointing
another deferred dream
what would you have been
if he'd not come along,
or i?
archaeologist,
teacher,
writer,
the sky
was the limit
but that chance now is mine
and i'll take it
to a loft space
to a castle
to the highway
california here i come
right back where
you left off from
the edge of the pillow
wiping sleep from your
eyes, dreamt of warmer
places
and less struggled times
working fingers to the
bone for every dime you
might hone
some thanks or recognition
would finally be your own
they always were though
so through and through
it was not all in vain,
i write here, now, for YOU.
