Sitting in the day room

Mrs. Moot

and her son

jowl to jowl

on the couch

staring at the screen

frozen on a Jeopardy question.

Mrs Moot

breasts feeds him

Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Full

he curls into a middle-age fetus.

Dutifully

Mrs. Moot's son

shakes his head

like a mournful widow

to the mantra of elderly stock phrases

that his mother drones

into the night.

VISITING HOURS ARE OVER!

Mrs. Moot looks at me

and heads to the door

her son calls to her

in a fit of  screaming emasculation

" I love you mother!"

 " I love you mother!"

"I love you mother!"

She smiles apologetically

" He always has been such a thoughtful boy."
