Gary (Batman) Leftrick (a brother, a son, a husband, a father, a friend)

I wrote this around October, 2003, as a tribute to the friends I used to hang with, and the places where I used to hang with them.

I got word last night from my brother that one of the friends I mentioned in the tribute died Tuesday, March 2, 2004. Gary (Batman to his friends and family) Leftrick. I don't have one single bad memory of Batman!

What do I remember about Batman? He loved his wife, Tina; he loved his family; he loved his friends. He taught me how to shoot pool - the RIGHT way! My prayers and thoughts are with the Leftricks, and also with the family of another friend, Tom Hollingsworth, who also died on Tuesday, of a heart attack. I will be at Batman's visitation on Thursday, and will likely also be at the funeral on Friday.

Ode to the SouthTown Crowd (repost for Batman's death)

Kenny & Batman (Gary) Leftrick, Tina Biggs, Jack & Jill Suter, Tina, Kenny & James Rawls, Lori Morgan, Pam Morgan, Doug, Mike & David Gentry, Jeff & Joe Mason, Jaws (Ronnie Ford), Lynne Mayes, Juanita & Robert Henderson, Beverly Wilson. The BAD Crowd in Springfield, TN from 1976-1983 - The GOOD years; The PARTY years! Sulphur Fork Creek, Hills Mill, Flat Rock, the Covered Bridge, Branding Iron (Paul, who memorized customers' food orders), Baldwin's Barbecue, Springfield Skating Rink, Hinkle Chair Company, Blackpatch Rd, Cutting & Hanging tobacco, OLD Springfield High School on West Main. Kinney's Road, town square, Springfiled movie theater, SouthPaw at the Armory, NewTown, Gaws, Flewellyn (Washington Rd), Coopertown, 49 Market, South Main. This is the Springfield I remember; the SouthTown I remember. These were the times we could walk across anyone's property, through the woods and the streams and the fields, and NOT get shot at! There were no Gangs, no guns and knives (nobody could PROVE it!); just companionship, commiseration, friendship, bonding. We looked out for each other. We had our differences, and we got over them. We fought, we argued, we loved, we laughed and cried. We lost a few along the way. This is my ode to the SouthTown crowd of 1976 to 1983. May this find you well. Love, Jeff Mason.
