Just your typical, atypical winter on the High Plains

Bitter cold – well below zero the first week of November

Never really had too much snow – not much for Chinooks

Had a brown Thanksgiving and a brown Christmas

Could have played golf each day if you were tough enough

Then – the day after New Year’s Day – whatever day that is

It got down to twenty-five below again for a week or so

The heat bill damned near put me in the poorhouse

Poorhouse? – – bah!  Better spent at the whooo-re house

And as I recall – after that cold spell – all in all:

The weather was decent here this time of year

Folks in Sunny California would have died from exposure

But shame on them for exposing themselves anyhow

Here we hearty specimens frolic outside in tee shirts

When it gets up to forty and the wind isn’t screaming

And now – lots of seasoned veterans are asserting

This past February has been the mildest maybe in memory

It was appropriate in this year of four -- a leap year

For that passed twenty-ninth day of February last

Was one of those glorious February daze past

Why?  -- You might ask if you’ve bothered to follow

This rambling tale of woe, depravity and deprivation

For the very, very day after the Leap Year Day

March First to be exact – March Leapt in Like a Lion

And I mean that the weather seriously turned to shit

Spring hasn’t sprange and neither has it sprung

But in theory at least – the end of Winter is in sight

Figuratively, if not literally – we have yet to Beware the Ides

And while I have few morals – the moral of this story is

Beware the Ides of March Leapt in Like a Lion
