There's nothing on a dark, cold night
Like a bowl of tatties soup.
It warms you right down to the soul
And even calms the croup.
With twenty kids and a hungry spouse
How do you feed the troop?
For just a hole, a pot, and bowl
You can make some tatties soup.

When I was a girl we hadn't much
And barely could get by
My Mom and Dad did all they could
To shelter us from the sky.
Though neither one was much a cook
I cannot tell a lie
They both could boil a tattie that
Was so good I could cry.

Now when my Dad began to make
A a steady salary
My Mom she got the bright idea
Of corned beef hash for me
Straight from the can almost it was
Touched hot butter briefly
My napkin got the best of it
And I stayed quite hungry.

Oh what I wouldn't have given for
Just one boiled tattie then.
When later their degrees paid off
I'd wish that wish again.
Some things are nice that come with riches
And material gain
But filet doesn't warm the heart
The way tatties soup can.
