Sprites
He watched the vague, shifting energy patterns. Strange patterns of ever changing shapes that flickered in a throbbing and halting manner. They came closer to him as he softly sang the ancient siren's song.
One of the smaller patterns emerged. Beautifully iridescent, in muted colors of pink and green, it fluttered nearer. It lingered for a moment, floating in mid air as it transformed its self into a tiny, female sprite! One with large, green, transparent wings.
The sprite's pink body was almost hidden by its long blue-green hair. Its round unblinking eyes stared at him as it fluttered almost within reaching distance. He remained still, barely breathing, yet, softly singing the haunting song.
To his amazement, the little sprite began to utter sounds, in a bell-like-tinkle of a voice. One that was barely audible. The sprite swayed to and fro as it began to dance. The other energy patterns floated nearer!
Two patterns transformed into the shapes of male and female sprites, joining the other in an energetic dancing frenzy! The three danced in abandon, whirling and darting up and down. They were entranced as they enjoyed dancing in the vibrations of his song!
This realization surprised him so, that he stopped singing! He began coughing loudly! At which time the dancing sprites and all the other energy patterns, vanished! Dismayed, he began to sing again, trying to recall them, to no avail! They were gone. He had broken the spell.

that was pretty well written I like sprites to.
elves and such, Return of the King is one of my
favorite movies beside . Good story. |

I sang and danced once, but no sprite ever came near. Oh well, maybe in the next life. Thnx for sharing this very wonderful piece Gwen. I like it a whole lot. i hate it when i break the spell. the disappear so quickly, it's like they were never even present.
wonderful evocation, poet, your descriptions are very easy to visualize, the story flows cleanly with no distractions! you should lengthen this, make it a novel! |

Very spell binding....I am sorry, I just couldn't help that pun! lol.
Seriously now, I loved this short, but sweet story!!! Great write.
Oh and by the way....a good story isn't counted in the amount
of words entered upon a sheet of paper ( or any other medium)...
it's counted by the ability to move someone...
to enter into their mind and spark their imagination....and to get them
to ask for more....

| more of a vignette than a story, since it lacks plot and conflict developement--really just a slice of life. That being said, the style has a strong prose element, it captivates, and shows great promise. To complete this, you need to show how he event fixes a problem, settling a conflict. The work needs to be expanded to tell us how this fantastic situation even came to take place. What you have is great; I just want to see more. |
