My second short story
My son was busy
So I drove my grandson, a hyper eleven year old prodigy,
To basketball practice, at a local college, He entered the gym, I stayed
At the lobby watching television, An hour into the practice,
He came out for a brake, a drink of water and to see how I was doing,
I continued watching television.
After a while I nodded into a deep doze, I was disoriented when a Handyman
Rattling a bunh of keys, woke me up, all the lights were out,
He inquired, what I was doing there so late? I explained, I had escorted my Grandson, to basketball practice, He said sorry pop, Everyone is gone,
Oh Lord! Where is my grandson? I ran outside, the area was isolated, My car
Was gone.
I remembered it was very cold, when we arrived, now it seemed it was much warmer, It was still dark, Darker now and very late, a low moving fog, was crawling into the area, One can see the mist, moving slowly near the corner street light, As I walked away from the college, the handyman waved goodbye, he retured into the building, making a log entery of the incident.
In the morning, when The Head custodian arrived, he read the log book, as he did every morning, this time, He grabbed the log book and marched right into the Dean's office, So the Dean may read this one special report, after reading it, the Dean lowered his head, closing his eyes as if in prayer,Shacking his head, from side to side, The head custodian asked him, "Sir who was that old gentleman"
The Dean walked to the window, looking out for a moment, that seemed like an eternity, He turned to face the Head custodian, almost in tears and tried to explain, that the old gentleman, was his grandfather.
He passed away, in our lobby, one night, some twenty years ago, while waiting for me, during one of my basketball practice, when I was a kid.
