Rainy nights and donkeys
It is storming here. After days and days of onerous triple digits it is raining. Lightening is crashing against the horizon and thunder shakes and booms towards us. The horses have moved toward the back; taking advantage of the momentary break in humidity and relishing the cool drops against their sweaty backs. Three of my dog pack are cowering around my ankles, captive to unconscious racial memories of danger.
I was worried about Duke, my lawn ornament donkey out alone in the dark in the approaching storm. I scurried to the back French doors to check on him, flipped the switch on and faced Ears and Nose pressed up against them. On the back porch looking in and waggling ears at me was Duke. He stretched his mouth wide, and sang to me in that indubitable donkey bray. Worried about him, I threw open the door and barely stopped him from sauntering in. I stepped out, fed him a carrot, and assured him all was safe. He moved daintily off the porch and strolled over to his water bucket and hay. After assuring myself he was fine, I went back inside, re-wrapped dogs around me and went to sit down in my office. The security lights out front came on and I looked toward the window to see Ears and Nose. Duke sang to me. I went to the front door, opened it, petted, fed a carrot, and he left again.
This scenario has repeated itself five times so far:
Open back door, feed, pet, watch leave.
Light on, see face in window, get sung to, open door, feed, pet, and watch leave.
Its going to be a long night.

| I wish I was a good cartoon artist, for some reason I can just see Duke sauntering in and settling down on the sofa to watch TV with a carrot snack beside him! Jackie <> < |
