There are questions we wish someone to ask that may affect our lives
A light breeze blew off the chilling waters of the Savannah River and wafted over the lone figure that stood silently on the rocking dock. The velvet night seemed to wrap her gently in invisible yet comforting arms, while the shadowed treed leaned protectively over her. As she stood there staring at the far off shore, a slight creaking noise alerted told her that someone had come up behind her. Without turning she spoke exasperation weighing heavily in her words.
“Who told you I was here?”
“It doesn’t matter,” the stranger spoke. “What matters is that I found you.”
Sighing she walked slowly to the end of the metal dock, sandals flopping as she moved. Each step she took away from the figure was as though her feet were sticking to the moving surface almost as if moving off from him was hard to do. Moving lights on inky water caught her attention and she wordlessly watched them until they disappeared around a gentle bend in the shoreline. She was now turned toward him, something she had tried to avoid since he had first ventured onto the waving dock. Looking at his gentle face, she could feel warm tears welling up in her eyes. Turning away from him she could still see his face in front of her, could see his serious light green eyes that wanted to know everything she was thinking no matter how strange her thoughts were.
“Why did you come here, why did you seek me out?”
“ That you should know. You have been acting a tad strange lately and I want to know why, and if there is anything I can do to help you.”
“Oh, dear heart, I wish I could tell you, but I do not want to bother you with my problems. Besides it just does not matter anyway.”
She felt his hand lightly rest on her shoulder and turn her gently toward him. She let him pull her into his shoulder and hold her as his touch broke the barrier that had held back her tears for so long. She sobbed longingly into the fabric of his shirt, wetting it thoroughly so that it stuck to his skin. Slowly she sank to the ground still crying in anguish and sorrow. Curling into a herself, knees held against her chest she began to rock, gradually at first then a little faster after awhile. His arms wrapped around her body, stilling her motion, holding her tightly he whispered softly into her hair that wafted around her wet face.
“What do you want from me?” She half screamed.
“I want nothing from you, sweetheart, that you cannot give. All I desire is your love.”
“You have had it ever since I met you.”
He placed his hand under her chin lifting her head toward his face, he lightly kissed her, then looked deeply into her puffy red eyes. She could see emotions warring behind the mask that hid his true self from her, fighting for dominance was one that she wanted. One she knew that he gave her day after day in the form of his patience and slight understanding.
“ I have wanted to ask you this for awhile, the answer is yours to give, and whatever it is…I respect your decision.
Anxiously she stared at him, hoping beyond hope that the question he wanted to ask her was the question she wanted to hear. If it was then she knew the answer she was going to give, just has she had given all of her heart to him, so would she give all of her self to him as well. Their eyes met, locking their souls together, stopping time, and banishing everyday thoughts from their minds.
“Go on, ask me. You can ask me anything you wish.”
Letting her go he slipped away from her and knelt down in front of her. His face serious in the dark night that was softly lit by a thousand stars and the light that shone from her eyes. He fumbled with his hair, and nervously stroked his chin, while always looking directly into her eyes. Finally he stopped moving, and began to speak so softly she could barely hear him.
“I wish to spend my life with you, forever, never letting you go. I want to protect you to the best of my ability. Will you let me do this?”
“Yes,” she breathed.
They arose and held each other tightly, breaking away they rejoined in a deep passionate kiss that reflected the now glorious mood of the evening. Hand in hand they walked away, ready to tackle a new day together.
