Julia explained that her uncle owned a restaurant.

I can call him if you like, she offered.
I know he’s hiring…

And he’ll probably pay your tuition
For culinary school too--
If everything works out…

David nodded yes.

She went into the bedroom, and called.
Finally, she shouted,
How’s 3 p.m. tomorrow?

Good, he replied.

Julia returned to him content.
It's all set.

You'll meet my Uncle Serg
At his restaurant
Tomorrow at 3.

She plopped down next to him on the sofa,
And turned on the television.

Then she huddled close to David.
Eventually, she put her head
On his shoulder--

Which made David uneasy.

There was something about her--
And this eagerness to help,
That made him uncomfortable.

And this closeness…

He reached for his wine cooler.
No matter how it made him feel--
He was ready for a drink.

She really was moving way too fast…
For his tastes at least.

He put his arm around her--
It was only the courteous thing to do,
Especially since she seemed so happy.

I really like you David, she whispered softly.
I think we’ll get along fine…
