Bing Crosby
Why is it when I meet someone new, and they ask me what I do.
I tell them I am a writer.
"What do you write?"
"Well let's see, I write poetry, short stories, general musings on life and people."
"Are you famous?"
"Well, no I am not a household name, But I am sort of noteable in some circles."
This usually effectively ends the conversation, with an, "Oh, that's nice."
Is it so hard to believe that there are people out there who do actually write? If I said my name was Stephen King, or Don King for that matter, would they believe me then?
It seems that it would easier for people to believe me if I told them I was a nuclear physicist, and am working for SETI.
Go figure.
I once was placed in a first class seat on a flight I was taking home on military standby status. I looked across the isle from me and there sat Bing Crosby. I said in naive astonishment at being so near a famous person,
"Bing Crosby, what are you doing here?"
He took his pipe out of his mouth and said something to me I will never forget as long as I live. He simply said, in that beautiful voice of his,
"Everybody has to be somewhere."

At least he spoke to you, some of these people wouldn't give us mere mortals the time of day. Anyway, you should have fed him some bullshit. But you forgot to say you were only a small boy then? hee hee

I just wish you'd called this: "Everybody has to be somewhere"! I could write a whole song on that title myself. I'm glad I read this one. Every creative artist (especially unknown) ought to read this story. Send it in to Reader's Digest or something. Besides, I am one of the 'infamously' unknown artists in America (for having done what I do for thirty years!) Best of everything to you.
