tribute to the old soap
a lullaby plays gently, the tenderness of a young girl's flute. Sara enters David's room as a great vampire bat alights upon the windowframe's edge. Barnabas recalls his past with a deep sadness as he views Sara waking the youth resting in troubled sleep. "Sara, how did you get in here?" David asks, as he wipes the trace of sleep from his eyes. "I can go where I please, you know that David and I needed to see you," Sara says as she faces the window and frowns. The bat shrieks a piercing wail as it suddenly flies away under the shadowy cover of the night.
He is at the "old" house now perched just outside the door. The serum burns in his veins and the vampire bat falls like a stone to the ground. How many hours pass, that he may never say. He only knows that when he awakens he feels the touch of the sun on his face and the warmth is a memory almost forgotten. Barnabas rises from the ground, yawns and stretches. His muscles ache, it too is a feeling long gone, so very long gone. Looking down on his clothes he sees he is dressed in finery. His shoes buckle and are made of the finest dark leather. The long coat he wears is a light shade of grey. Barnabas stares ahead at the house just yards in front of him. He looks on as eternity ticks but he cannot remember. Barnabas is only a shadow cast by time on the lawns of yesterday. Hesitantly he begins walking towards the home he no longer knows.

| The memories unfurled in my brain reading this piece. I used to race home after school in New Orleans to see Dark Shadows. It came on 3:30 pm CST. My cousins and I, we were all fans. Thank you for this. ~~Nordette |

| I used to watch this show on Sci-Fi Channel -- the inspiration for Among Shadows was Dark Shadows. This is a good way to tribute the gothic soap opera. |
